Issue/Introduction

Some time after updating to Messaging Gateway (SMG) 10.7 the SMG system begins generating alerts indicating that swap utilization has exceeded 60% (default).

Symantec Messaging Gateway Alert Notification for [email protected]

======================= ALERT NOTIFICATION ================================

The swap space utilization on the following hosts has reached the threshold (60%):
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Host                     Swap used                Swap free                Date
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
smg-in1                  6,664,864 KB (64%)       3,870,120 KB (36%)       Mon Nov 28 11:35:13 PST 2016
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After an extended uptime, typically over a year of uninterrupted uptime, the scanning engine and mail transfer agent may utilize excess memory and contribute to the depletion of swap space.

Cause

Since the Messaging Gateway allows for customized rules that can variously impact the performance of the appliance, it is usually a good idea to reboot the appliance periodically.

Resolution

Reboot the appliance to refresh the system resources. If the issue returns again within a few months time, you may want to open a case with product support for a system review.
