What are the criteria to show work items in the backlog page?

Issue/Introduction

Under what conditions would a work item not appear on the Plan/Backlog page? 

For example, a defect is not appearing on the Backlog page but can be found on the Quality -> Defect page.

Resolution

The criteria needed to show work items on the backlog page are as follows:

• Work items must not be associated with any iteration or release

Additionally:

• Defects must be in an open state
• User stories must not be parents
