Issue/Introduction

When you install or upgrade the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM), you may see the following message:

The Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager failed to connect to the Microsoft SQL Server database.

The management server has detected that your SQL Server database or operating system version does not support TLS 1.2 or later. You must either enable the management server to use a less secure TLS version or upgrade your database or operating system to a version that supports TLS 1.2 or later.  

Cause

This message appears because your management server runs on either Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 or an unsupported version of the Microsoft SQL Server database.

Resolution

If your management server runs on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 RU2, you must enable TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.0. See: Enabling TLS 1.1 on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2

If your management server runs an unsupported version of the Microsoft SQL Server database, perform one of the following tasks:
