Issue/Introduction

We need to know what the utilization percentage is for each of our Dispatch database files so that we know if an area is becoming full and whether or not we need to perform regular batch cleanup maintenance against the area or increase the space allocated for a file/area to expand the file/area to a larger size.

Environment

Dispatch; z/os; space; utilization; percentage; report; utility; dsexstat; size; file; area; idms

Resolution

To produce a report showing both the percentage of utilization and the file size, for each of the CA Dispatch database files/areas, you can execute the DSEXSTAT— Database Space Utilization Report utility.

- To see the percentage of utilization for each of the files/areas...

Do a FIND on the specific area name you are interested in (For example, the archive file or "AR-AREA") and in the report line just under the area name you will see a "FILE UTILIZATION IS ?? PERCENT" message towards the right side of the page.

- To determine the size of the file (i.e. How many blocks have been initialized for that file)...

Do a FIND on the specific area name you are interested in and look for the report line immediately under the area name that reads 'PAGE SIZE IS ??? CHARACTERS. DUMPED ??? PAGES from XXX=XX AREA'.  The "DUMPED ??? PAGES" portion of the message tells you the number of blocks initialized for that area.

Additional Information

The DSEXSTAT job is documented in the Chapter 13 - UTILITIES, of the CA Dispatch System Programmers Guide.
