Quick Copy for DB2 for z/OS

Issue/Introduction

A Quick Copy Job that has been executed many times with no issues suddenly failed with RC=16 and the following error message.

PQC0130E READ FAILED - PQC0192E INTERNAL RC 016 AT LOCATION 0160.

Found the failed Quick Copy Job was run with EXCP=YES parameter, with EXCP=NO parameter same Quick Copy Job finished with RC=00.

Environment

Release : 20.0

Component : Quick Copy for DB2 for z/OS

Resolution

It was not possible to recreate the error message at will, the error could be because of the position of DB2 VSAM linear data set on the disk as EXCP YES parameter is sensitive to the location of DB2 VSAM linear data set.

The recommended solution is to switch to EXCP=NO engine and discontinue using EXCP=YES engine.  Further, if you have not encountered the READ FAILURE issue again since changing to EXCP=NO, we recommend that you move forward with this as a this configuration change.

Aside from no longer having the problem, the larger reasons for retaining the EXCP=NO setting are:

  • EXCP=NO is required for Pervasive Encryption.
  • EXCP=YES will be deprecated at some point in the future because of the Pervasive Encryption support, zIIP support, and performance improvements provided with the EXCP=NO copy engine.
