Issue/Introduction

While login to Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) following error message appears:

Failed to connect to the server.

Make sure that the server is running and your session has not timed out.
If you can reach the server but cannot log on, make sure that you provided the correct parameters.
If you are experiencing network issues, contact your system administrator. ErrorCode: 0x80020000

SEPM services are stopped and fails to start.

Below error is found in Windows Event viewer:

The Java Virtual Machine has exited with a code of -1, the service is being stopped.

In scm-server-0.log:

Caused by: com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: The transaction log for database 'SEMDB' is full due to 'LOG_BACKUP'.

Cause

In this scenario, SEMDB_log.ldf (SQL Server Database Transaction Log File) has grown exponentially.

It happened as 'Truncate the database transaction logs' option was not checked on SEPM Console > Database Properties > Database Maintenance Tasks.

Resolution

Enable the option 'Truncate the database transaction logs' and restart the SEPM services.

Additional Information

After you install the management server, the space in the database grows continually. The management server slows down after a few weeks or months.

As transaction log records almost every change that takes place within the database, it is recommended to enable the option 'Truncate the database transaction logs' for database maintenance. By keeping it enabled SEPM server removes unused data from the transaction log. It also helps to reduce the database size and improved response time with database.
