Issue/Introduction

Why are the "ADSST011*0387" messages displayed during backup or archive jobs pertaining to Alternate Indexes (AIX)?

Environment

Release: Diskā„¢ Backup and Restore 12.5

Resolution

The sysparm VSARCAIX displaying the message "ADSST011*0387 during backup and archive and are informational message.

Things to consider:

  • During the implicit backup and archive of VSAM files, all the attributes of the VSAM file, including those of the AIX and paths, are backed up to the output media (tape or VTS or disk data sets). There is NO parameter or sysparm that will prevent this from happening.
  • During Restore or Recover of VSAM files, the base cluster is defined and the data is loaded. Then, the AIX and PATH(s) are defined and rebuilt.

The Restore/Recover action noted above is automatic unless a sysparm or parameter is specified to cause the AIX to not be defined and/or rebuilt.
Refer sysparms VSAIXDEF, VSBLDINX, NOAIXDEF and NOBLDINX on the Restore command and AIX= on the Recover command. These AIX attributes are stored at backup or archive.

Additional Information

Refer the tech doc for the following sysparms.

VSARCAIX -
N - Alternate indexes not processed as separate data sets (default)
Y - Alternate indexes are processed as separate data sets...
       - In implicit backups, and...
       - In explicit archive or backup of an alternate index
("Y" has no effect in explicit archive or backup of a base cluster.)

VSARCAIXN
- Will not process AIXs as separate data sets.
- The 0387 message is displayed for every AIX encountered.

VSARCAIXy

  • Will process AIXs as separate data sets, meaning you will see a DSNINDEX record for each AIX.
  • The 0387 msg, will not be displayed.
  • A little more processing time and media (tape) will be used.

Restore of the base VSAM with the NOAIXDEF parm, followed by the explicit Restore of the AIX data sets.

Note about Return Codes...
The 0387 messages issued as a result of the setting of VSARCAIX would not cause a RC=4 as other "data set not backed up/archived". RC=0 will result if no other 0387 messages were issued for other reasons.
