Agent for Sharepoint Registration Failed with Unknown Error 127

Issue/Introduction

Registration of the Agent for Sharepoint fails with the following error:

Cause

Insufficient permissions on the Agent for Sharepoint directory.  As a result the agent registration process fails to write to the 'webagent.conf' and 'smhost.conf' file during the registration process.  The Agent Configuration Wizard only returns a generic error (Registration Failed: Unknown Error 127).

If you attempt to register the Agent for Sharepoint manually using "smreg" it will print a more detailed error message indicating the root cause of the problem.

Resolution

1) Refer to  KB53205, make sure all pre-requisite libraries were properly added to the server. 

2) Run 'smreghost' to manually register the agent.

3) Record the error returned in 'smreghost'.

4) Ensure the  permissions on the Sharepoint Agent directories are appropriate for the user used to run the configuration wizard, 'smreghost'. and to stop/stop the instance.
