Issue/Introduction

When opening the Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE) console, the following error is shown:

Access is denied. User is unauthorized or has limited rights on server <servername>.

Cause

A cause for this error is that the Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange service is not running.

Resolution

Ensure following services are started:

• Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange
• Symantec Mail Security Utility Service

Additional Information

If the services are running, check if the issue is caused by DCOM permissions.
