Issue/Introduction

A change was made in the handling of passwords that contain special characters, when validating licenses,  on the Broadcom support site.

Resolution

The recommended way to provide a password from the CLI is from the interactive prompt. When providing passwords this way there is no new treatment needed for special characters.

For example, if the licensing credentials are:

Username: User1

Password: abc!123

Then the following CLI command can be used on an ISG to request the license for the serial number 123456:

(config-licensing)# load id 123456 username User1 password

Value for 'password' (<valid password to authenticate to download site>): abc!123

Notably, this works by pressing <return> without actually typing in the password value. The CLI will detect the missing password value and provide a prompt. If the interactive prompt is used for providing the licensing password, then the password can be typed in verbatim, regardless of the characters that it contains.

Alternatively, if the password is entered without using the interactive prompt, then special characters need to be escaped appropriately. In particular, the special characters are:

!

"

\

?

<space>

When providing the special characters as part of a password a backslash must come before each special character on the command line.

For example, if the licensing credentials are:

Username: User1

Password: abc!123

Then the following CLI command can be used on an ISG to request the license for the serial number 123456:

(config-licensing)# load id 123456 username User1 password abc\!123
