Issue/Introduction

A user-defined scan was created to scan a network share with Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP). The scan gets cancelled if the user that created the scan logs out, even though the Virus and Spyware policy has "Allow user-defined scheduled scans to run when scan author is not logged on" enabled. How can you create a scan or change the policy so that scans survive, or recover from, logout?

Cause

The scan started when the user was logged on, and does not fall under the context of "Allow user-defined scheduled scans to run when scan author is not logged on".

Resolution

Scans that start when the author is logged in will be aborted when they log out. One of the following methods may be used to avoid the abort:

  1. If the account must be used for other functions, keep the user logged in indefinitely.
  2. Avoid logging in near the start of the scheduled scan, or leaving an open user session for the related account when not in use.
  3. Create a special user that no one will log in with (aside from during creation of the scan) and leave it always logged out.
