NS Console does not open and returns error: HTTP Error 503. The service is not available

Issue/Introduction

The NS console fails to open with the following error:

Error: HTTP Error 503. The service is not available 

After restarting the IIS, the error was changed to:

HTTP Error 404. The requested resource is not found.

Environment

ITMS 8.x

Cause

Any of the following could potentially cause this issue:

• Check the Altiris services and make sure all are running.
• Check http:\\localhost. If that is not loading as well, it means the issue is with IIS and App Pools and not just the IIS.
• In this case, McAfee was blocking both the NS and IIS.

Resolution

The following steps fixed this issue:

• Disable McAfee
• Reboot the Notification Server.
• Optional: Enable McAfee again.
