We are moving from a traditional tape vaulting solution with native physical tape and IBM TS7700 copy export tape vaulting to a tape replication solution where a local virtual tape system (non-IBM) replicates virtual tape volumes to a remote facility. Our objective is to have CA-1 tape volume records updated in a more real-time fashion with the appropriate OUTCODE to indicated that these volumes are vaulted.
Our preference is to do this by keying off of something like SMS storage group or library name (these devices emulate an SMS Manual Tape Library) rather than keying off of something like VOLSER lists that would have to be maintained.
z/os
The batch vaulting process does not have the flexibility to do that and the closest realtime way to OUTCODE a tape is with the TMSDISP DD
You can use the TMNOKEY to store the storage group See: Define Keywords
Also unfortunately at this time there is no way for a z/OS application to find the status (replicated or not) of a virtual-volume in the EMC system.
