Issue/Introduction

I installed a GATEWAY Version 10 API cluster and in the VMware console I get the following message: "A newer version of VMware Tools is available for this virtual machine."

If VMWare tools is part of OS and API is an Appliance, why is there an incompatible version?

Resolution

Vmware tools is part of the O.S however the image you downloaded is a GA version , VMware has suffered several updates since that time, same API Gateway G10 version.

to update Vmware tools

1- Login to your virtualization environment using the VSphere client. 
2- Right click the Virtual Machine in the Inventory Pane. 
3- Select the "Guest" sub-menu option. 
4- Select the "Install/Upgrade VMware Tools" option. 
5- Select "Interactive" when prompted. 
6- Access the virtual console and log in as root. 
7- Mount the virtual CD-ROM via `mount /dev/cdrom /media`. 
8- Extract the VMware Tools installer via `tar xvf /media/*gz -C /tmp` 
9- Run the installer script via `perl /tmp/vmware-tools-distrib/vmware-install.pl` 
10- Accept all default values. 
11- Restart VM Once complete, you should be upgraded in accordance with the version of VMware Tools used by your ESX platform.
