Issue/Introduction

After assigning more memory to Tomcat and installing 64-bit java (to support the assigned/allocated memory), the Tomcat Windows Service is failing to start with the error:

Windows could not start the Apache Tomcat 8.5 Tomcat8 on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 1.

Environment

Release : 8.2

Component : CONTINUOUS DELIVERY DIRECTOR

Cause

The version of Tomcat installed was 32-bit.

Resolution

Install a 64-bit version of Tomcat. To do this we followed these steps:

  1. Made a backup of the webapps/cdd war files.
  2. Uninstalled the 32-bit version of Tomcat
  3. Installed the 64-bit version of Tomcat
  4. Copied the backup .war files from step 1 back into the webapps folder.
  5. Followed the steps outlined here to increase memory: Bad Gateway after CDD QA Upgrade
  6. Started Tomcat services and confirmed CDD was loading.
