Obtaining the Vendor ID (VID) and Product ID (PID) values for whitelisting in Endpoint Encryption

Issue/Introduction

Endpoint Encryption RME (Removable Media Encryption) can exclude certain devices from encryption.

To do this:

  1. Open Symantec Endpoint Encryption Manager.
  2. Edit an existing policy. For example, a policy listed under Symantec Endpoint Encryption Native Policy Manager.
  3. Navigate to the page Removable Media Encryption Computer Policy - Device and File Type Exclusions.
  4. Enable the option Exclude these removable media devices from encryption.
  5. Enter the Vendor ID (VID) and Product ID (PID) for the device you wish to exclude from encryption.
  6. Click the Next button and continue with the policy configuration.
  7. Click the Finish button to save the policy.

The VID and PID values for a device can be obtained as follows:

  1. Connect the device to a Windows 10 computer.
  2. Run Device Manager.
  3. Double click on the device.
  4. Click on the Details tab.
  5. Select Hardware IDs from the dropdown list:

Sometimes the VID and PID are not available from Hardware IDs property.

Environment

Symantec Endpoint Encryption 11.3 and above.

Resolution

If the PID and VID are not available from Hardware IDs property, select the property of Parent from the dropdown list. This will often contain the VID and PID. In the example below, the VID is 0781 and the PID is 5567:
