Issue/Introduction

After upgrading from an older version of Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager to 14.3 RU2, administrators may start receiving "The client computer has been renamed" notifications.

Notifications that are sent to administrator's email look as follows:

Notifications that appear in Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager, under Monitors > Notifications, look as follows:

Environment

Mac

Cause

On a Mac device, the Computer Name can contain spaces. As of version 14.3 RU2, Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager does not accept spaces in computer names and replaces the space " " with a dash "-".

For example, a Computer Name "Mac Device Test1" will be renamed to "Mac-Device-Test1" in Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager.

Resolution

To avoid this issue, do not use spaces when selecting a Computer Name for a Mac device.

For more information about restrictions on valid host names, see the following article:

Additional Information

  • The issue is applicable only to Mac clients.

  • The end users will not see or experience any changes on the client. (on the client, the Computer Name will remain the same.)

  • The issue does not affect the protection of Mac clients.
