Slow Data Model creation in TDM Portal

Issue/Introduction

When creating a data model, the TDM Portal 4.9.100.4 is slow.

When we try to create a data model with only a few tables, the Portal TDM functionality searches all tables in the database (approximately 50,000 tables), while only 10 tables were selected.

Which is taking around 3.5 hours to complete.

Cause

Prior to TDM 4.9.1 this is the expected behavior, and TDM Portal is working as designed. When Portal creates the Data Model, it first "discovers" all the tables in the database, but the actual tables scanned will only be the tables you included/excluded, these will be the only tables in the Data Model. 

Resolution

However, because so many customers requested that we consider improvements to the Data Model creation, the Product Management and Engineering teams redesigned this portion of the code. With the latest TDM Portal 4.9.1 patch we now only care about the tables you selected. Therefore, if you select 10 out of 1000 tables, we will only discover and scan the 10 selected tables for your data model. If you are experiencing this issue, please open a support case and request a copy of the latest TDM Portal 4.9.1 patch. At the time this article was written, the latest Portal patch release was 4.9.311.0
