Disk Backup and Restore - MVS

Issue/Introduction

In many cases the MERGE function is used to move data from one Virtual Tape System to another in a very easy and efficient way. It can happen anyway that the MERGE run issues the following message:

ADSDM218 4609 MERGE HAS BYPASSED MULTI-VOLUME ARCHVOL KEY:archvol, DSN=data set name DUE TO INPUT ARCHVOL

LIMIT OF 35 VOLUMES

so the archvol is bypassed and not moved because it is multi-volume and spans on more than 35 volumes.

How to force it to be moved by MERGE on the new VTS?

Or is there any other way to move it to the new VTS?

Environment

Release : All

Component : CA Disk Backup and Restore

Resolution

There’s no way to use MERGE or XCOPY functions to move the multi-vol archvol group when it consists of more than 35 volumes and this is because the I/O control blocks are limited to 35.

That said, the suggestion is to Purge it in CA DISK and use an IBM Hydra Tape Copy Utility (if the new VTS is IBM or in general any VTS Tape Copy Utility) to copy this multi-volume archvol. Then it can be Rebuilt in the production FDS/FDB.

The CA Disk Tape Copy utility (ADSDM227, MERGCOPY Proc) could be used to make a copy in the new IBM VTS and disable the old primary.
