Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange

Issue/Introduction

You want to know if you can replace the Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 that is installed with Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE) with Microsoft Access Database Engine 2016. You need to remove anything related to Microsoft Office 2010 due to the MS14-024 vulnerability.

Environment

SMSMSE 7.9.1 MP1 (build 7.9.2.62)
SMSMSE 7.10 (build 7.10.0.17)

Resolution

You can replace the Access Database Engine 2010 with Access Database Engine 2016.

  1. Download 64-bit the installer from Microsoft:
  2. Stop the following services:
    • Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange
    • Symantec Mail Security Utility Service
  3. Uninstall Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010
  4. Install Microsoft Access Database Engine 2016
  5. Start the services from step 2.
  6. Open the console and verify that statistics are displaying.
    • If the process was not successful, you will get an error when opening the console and will not see statistics.

Additional Information

If you receive an error reading "The code execution cannot proceed because VCRUNTIME140.dll was not found.", please install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 update available here. Installing this package will resolve the issue.
