Symantec Endpoint Protection or Endpoint Security (SEP or SES) macOS client GUI opens extremely slowly in virtual machine
Environment
SEP or SES for Mac, running in Parallels or VMware Fusion virtual machine
Cause
The virtual video adapter requires adjustment
Resolution
In VMware Fusion, edit the virtual machine's vmx file on the host per the instructions here: How to Enable 3D acceleration in MacOS 11 (Big Sur) Virtual Machines.
In Parallels, configure the virtual machine with the following command line run from the host: "sudo prlctl set <VM_ID> --video-adapter-type apple"
In both virtualization products, you should also be using the newest version of the hypervisor and tools.
Symantec is aware of this issue and is investigating whether the product is unnecessarily dependent on video acceleration. This article will be updated as new information becomes available.
