Issue/Introduction

This article discusses how to activate TRACE level logging on GRLoader.  Such tracing is useful for troubleshooting GRLoader, such as a scenario where a given Configuration Item fails to load or update.

Environment

Release : CA Service Desk Manager 17.X.

Resolution

  1. In the SDM install directory's site\cfg\GRloader.properties file, please back up this file to a separate directory (do not make an in-place copy and change the extension).

  2. Once the GRloader.properties file is backed up, edit the file and make these changes:

    Original:
    log4j.rootCategory=info,grllog
    log4j.appender.grllog=org.apache.log4j.RollingFileAppender
    log4j.appender.grllog.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout
    log4j.appender.grllog.File=E:/PROGRA~1/CA/SERVIC~1/log/GRLoader.log
    log4j.appender.grllog.MaxBackupIndex=9
    log4j.appender.grllog.layout.ConversionPattern=%d{MM/dd HH:mm:ss.SSS} %-5p %c{1} %L %m %n

    Modified:
    log4j.rootCategory=DEBUG,grllog
    log4j.appender.grllog=org.apache.log4j.RollingFileAppender
    log4j.appender.grllog.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout
    log4j.appender.grllog.File=E:/PROGRA~1/CA/SERVIC~1/log/GRLoader.log
    log4j.appender.grllog.MaxBackupIndex=20
    log4j.appender.grllog.MaxFileSize=50MB
    log4j.appender.grllog.layout.ConversionPattern=%d{MM/dd HH:mm:ss.SSS} %-5p %c{1} %L %m %n

    The changes from the original file are highlighted for awareness.  The above changes will set logging to run in DEBUG mode.  It will also increase the log file size from 10 MB (default) to 50 MB and collect up to 20 log files instead of the default 9 log files.

  3. Save the modified GRloader.properties file.  There is no need to recycle any services as the changes should take effect immediately.

  4. Reproduce the issue as needed.

  5. Once the issue has been reproduced, remove the modified GRloader.properties file and restore the same file from backup.

The logging will be found in the location specified by the parameter "log4j.appender.grllog.File", in this case, file GRLoader.log in the given SDM install directory's log directory.  This location may vary depending on your implementation of Service Desk.

Additional Information

The GRloader.properties file is not generated until GRLoader is run for the first time.
