Release from quarantine error: "there was an error with the following item(s)"

Issue/Introduction

When releasing an email from quarantine in Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE), you get an error similar to:

There was an error with the following item(s)
SYQ320c183e1: c0090081

 

Cause

This is most commonly caused by a lack of permissions when releasing mail from quarantine. Because of how Windows UAC, it is common for applications to run without administrative privileges even if the launching user is an administrator.

Resolution

Launch the console explicitly as administrator by Right Click -> Run as Administrator.

You can configure the console to always launch as administrator by doing the following:

1. Right Click -> Properties
2. Go to the "Compatibility" tab
3. Check the "Run this program as an administrator" box.
