Installation of XCOM for Windows r11.6 SP03 hangs

Issue/Introduction

The installation/upgrade of XCOM r11.6 SP03 after installing JRE 1.8 on a Windows 2016 server starts and hangs shortly afterwards. This Windows 2016 server is a Virtual Machine(VM).

Cause

Activating the InstallAnywhere LAX debug by using the CTRL key per article Diagnose XCOM installer problems for UNIX/Linux and Windows showed this message in the console:

   Exception in thread "installer" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: GC overhead limit exceeded

Resolution

To resolve the problem increase the Java maximum heap from the default. The default value could be too low if server memory resources are low and limiting it.
Please follow these steps:

1. From Windows Search, search for cmd.exe. Right click on "Command prompt" and select "Run as administrator".
   
   
2. At the command prompt change directory to where the XCOM.exe program is stored.
   
   
3. Execute the following command: XCOM.exe -jvmxmx 200m

The installation should complete successfully.
