Issue/Introduction

The EDPA service for the Data Loss Prevention (DLP) agent fails to start, and you see the following error:

Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Environment

DLP 15.7 MP2

Cause

The Microsoft Windows Service Control Manager controls the state (i.e., started, stopped, paused, etc.) of Windows services. By default, Service Control Manager waits 30,000 milliseconds (30 seconds) for a service to respond. However, certain configurations, technical restrictions, or performance issues may result in the service taking longer than 30 seconds to start and report as ready to the Service Control Manager.

Resolution

Change the timeout period to give the service more time to start and report as ready.

  1. Open regedit.exe.
  2. Navigate to KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control.
  3. In the right pane, right-click, and then click New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  4. Type "ServicesPipeTimeout".
  5. Right-click on the new ServicesPipeTimeout DWORD entry, and then click Modify.
  6. In the Value data field, change it to 180000
  7. Change Base to Decimal, and click OK.
  8. Restart the system.
