Issue/Introduction

Administrators may seek to include image headers or logos in automated email notifications sent from Identity Manager, particularly those triggered via Policy Express.

This article clarifies why relative image paths fail and how to correctly reference hosted images.

Environment

Identity Manager 14.x

Cause

Email clients (such as Outlook or Gmail) are unaware of the internal application server root or the /user_console.war/images folder hierarchy. When a relative location is used, the recipient's mail client cannot resolve the path, resulting in missing images. Furthermore, Identity Manager Email Policies do not support sending files as actual attachments.

Resolution

To ensure images are visible in email notifications, the image must be hosted in a location that is accessible and resolvable by the recipient's email client. Use absolute URLs instead of relative paths.

  1. Host the Image: Upload the header image to a location accessible to your users.
    • Intranet Hosting: Use a shared internal folder or web server if all recipients are on the corporate network or VPN.
    • Internet Hosting: Use a public internet location or a Content Delivery Network (CDN) if recipients are accessing emails from external locations.
  2. Update the Email Template: Use the full absolute URL in the image tag.
    • Example: <img src="https://public-server.com/images/header.png">
  3. Verify Access: Ensure the firewall or security policies allow the expected recipients to reach the hosted image URL.
