Creating read only File Share Encryption folders

Issue/Introduction

Encryption Desktop File Share Encryption folders can be made read only for users who need to be able to access the encrypted files within the folder but not create new files.

Environment

Symantec Encryption Desktop File Share Encryption release 10.4 and above.

Resolution

In order to make File Share Encryption folders read only for some users, simply apply NTFS security permissions to the folder in the standard way and set the permission for certain users or Active Directory groups to the following:

• List folder contents
• Read

Group Keys also work correctly with read only folders.

Users with read only access will be able to open and read existing File Share protected documents but not modify documents or create new ones. Documents will open in read only mode.
