SPE install fails with error that 64 bit java runtime is missing

Install Error

The Java Runtime Environment could not be found.
Please install the 64 bit java runtime, 1.8 family update 111 or higher.

  • CentOS Linux 7.1 (64-bit) or later
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 7.0 (64-bit) or later
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 6.8 (64-bit) or later



  1. Click OK to clear the error.
  2. Click Finish to exit the wizard.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • Run the Installation Wizard again, and select Core server only (does not require JRE), or
    • Install JRE 8.0 update 111 or later, then run the Installation Wizard again, and select "Core server with user interface (requires JRE)"


NOTE: When installing as "Core server only" a successful install is indicated in the Windows Application Log as

Because the UI of SPE uses Java, additional steps may be required to permit Internet Explorer to open the UI, as noted here:


Without the UI, configuration and administration tasks are accomplished via xmlmodifier or through registering SPE with the CWP portal. For more on these topics, see: 


Also, note that while BROADCOM has not officially certified SPE for NAS for use on Windows 2019, it is observed to install on Windows 2019 with no known issues.
