Issue/Introduction

Users may encounter a failure in Identity Manager where tasks stop processing due to a decryption error. This is typically accompanied by database deadlock warnings in the system logs.

Environment

Identity Manager 14.x

Cause

This issue occurs when a Microsoft SQL Server transaction is selected as a deadlock victim during a communication buffer resource request. The resulting interruption prevents the BouncyCastle crypto library from finalising the cipher, leading to an InvalidCipherTextException. This can be caused by database performance issues or stale network connections/firewall blocks between the application and database tiers.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, perform the following steps:

  1. Coordinate with the SQL administration team to cycle (restart) the database server.
  2. Restart the Identity Manager / Identity Suite system.
  3. If the error persists, work with the networking team to verify there are no stale TCP connections or active firewall blocks affecting application-to-database communication.
