Issue/Introduction

Some SNMP utilities using SNMPv3 require that an snmpEnginID be provided for the target system. Because the SMG control center does not display this value in the graphical user interface (GUI) when SNMPv3 is enabled, the system must be directly queried using SNMP tools. This article provides the Object Identifier (OID) and the command necessary to extract the engine ID.

Environment

  • Product: Messaging Gateway (SMG)
  • Versions: 10.8, 10.9
  • Protocol: SNMPv3

Resolution

The snmpEngineID.0 value is located at OID 1.3.6.1.6.3.10.2.1.1.0.

To extract the value, run the following command from a Linux system with the snmpget utility installed. Replace the bracketed placeholders with the credentials configured in Administration > SNMP > Versions.

Example

For the admin user using SHA hashing:

snmpget -v3 -l authNoPriv -u admin -a SHA -A password -X password smg 1.3.6.1.6.3.10.2.1.1.0
iso.3.6.1.6.3.10.2.1.1.0 = Hex-STRING: 80 00 1F 88 80 C7 65 DD 41 1C 3D DA 5E 00 00 00 00
