Log File Cleanup via Cronjob for Identity Suite Virtual Appliance

Issue/Introduction

Automating the deletion of legacy log files on the Symantec IGA (Identity Suite) Virtual Appliance (vApp) helps maintain disk availability and system performance. This article provides the crontab configuration required to purge files older than 30 days across IDM, IG, IP, and Directory components.

Cause

Log files generated by Wildfly and component servers (Provisioning, Directory, Connector) accumulate over time. Without an automated cleanup process, the vApp disk partitions may reach capacity, leading to service instability or failure.

Resolution

To implement automated log rotation, follow these steps:

1. Verify existing crontab: Access the log directory and check if a crontab already exists for the user: crontab -l
2. Edit the crontab: Open the crontab editor to add the cleanup schedules: crontab -e
3. Add the cleanup syntax: Insert the following lines to execute a daily purge at midnight (00:00) for files older than 30 days:

• Identity Suite Logs (IDM, IG, IP): 00 00 * * * sh -c "find /opt/CA/VirtualAppliance/logs/IDM_logs/ /opt/CA/VirtualAppliance/logs/IG_logs/ /opt/CA/VirtualAppliance/logs/IP_logs/ -mtime +30 -name ".log" -delete"
• Connector Server Logs: 00 00 * * * sh -c "find /opt/CA/VirtualAppliance/logs/ConnectorServer_logs/ -mtime +30 -name ".log" -delete"
• Provisioning Server Logs (as user imps): 00 00 * * * sudo -u imps sh -c "find /opt/CA/VirtualAppliance/logs/ProvisioningServer_logs/ -mtime +30 -name ".log" -delete"
• Directory Logs (as user dsa): 00 00 * * * sudo -u dsa sh -c "find /opt/CA/VirtualAppliance/logs/Directory_logs/ -mtime +30 -name ".log" -delete"
