User 'automic' is unknown or an invalid password has been provided on Linux server using PAM

Issue/Introduction

When numerous jobs are started in parallel, in some occasions, a job is not submitted with the following error message:

    20200302/100416.770 - U02001007 User 'automic' is unknown or an invalid password has been provided.

Evidently, the user is known, as it works for every other jobs submission and the password does not change.

Authentication of is done by an LDAP server via PAM. No errors are found on the LDAP server.

Cause

The are not enough files descriptors available during submission of many jobs in parallel

Resolution

Solution:

 

Increasing the ulimit -n for the user that starts the job on the Agent's server
