Issue/Introduction

When we are trying to fetch Virtual Machine device name from the UIM database, we are noticing the Label giving junk characters with the Device Name.

 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxx-1axxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx VirtualMachine

How we can get rid of these Junk characters with the Label Name of the device?

Environment

Release : 9.0.2

Component : UNIFIED INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGEMENT

Resolution

The application does not assign names.This information comes strictly from the environment.
This could be a DNS issue or a vmware probe issue where the targets have those names set or because you do not have the latest vmware tools installed. Please check with your system / vmware admin to help determine the source of the information.

Here's a tip for your admins to help check the source of this information:
Set the discovery loglevel to 5

DISCOVERY_SERVER LOG:
1. Set the discovery_server at log level 5, increase log size to 10MB, and increase the number of files to retain.

a. To increase the log size edit the X..\Nimsoft\probes\service\discovery_server\log4j.xml
change the follow values as shown below:

<param name="MaxFileSize" value="10242880"/>
<param name="MaxBackupIndex" value="15"/>

b. To increase the log level use raw configure for the Discovery_server, set setup loglevel to 5

2. Deactivate the Discovery_server and delete all discovery_server logs
3. Activate the Discovery_server

Remove the device from usm and when it comes back in, check the discovery logs to see where it is coming from.
