IDMS VSAM database files on multiple volumes

Issue/Introduction

If a "normal" IDMS database area using EXCP is too large for one disk pack (volume), then the area must be mapped to multiple files. With EXCP processing, IDMS database files cannot span multiple volumes.

Is the same true for files using VSAM as the underlying file access method (note this is NOT Native VSAM).

Resolution

An IDMS VSAM database file can span multiple volumes as long as it is less than 4GB in size, otherwise multiple files must be used. See Placing Areas in Files.
