Issue/Introduction

The recommended way to factory default Management Center(MC) is by running "restore-defaults factory-defaults" via serial console or host console if you are using Virtual Appliance.

You need to factory default an S400 unit via serial console because of the following scenarios :

  • Lost console credentials to Management Center
  • Reboot loop happening caused by invalid/corrupted configuration
  • Unable to SSH to Management Center caused by Access Control List

Resolution

For Hardware Base (e.g. MC-S400), connect the serial console set up serial console terminal emulation settings:

Baud rate: 9600 bps 
Data bits: 8
Parity: none 
Stop bits: 1
Flow control: none

 

For Management Center Virtual Machine, on your VM host you can connect to the console on the VM guest.

For example,  KVM  VM host command:

virsh console <VM name>

Check your VM host documentation or engage your VM host administrator to get access VM guest console.

Once you are connected to the serial console:

Power cycle the MC.

When the device starts to boot, hit the space bar to enter boot mode:

Press the space key to select an alternate system to boot.

Seconds remaining until the default system is booted: 5

Hit space bar on your keyboard

Type "r" to restore to factory default and then select next boot image:

Type "r"

Type "y" when you see this message on screen:

 

WARNING: The system will be marked for re-initialization. Booting a supported

system image will cause the system to re-initialize and result in loss of all

configuration and log information upon next boot. Furthermore, configuration

will have to be done while physically situated at the appliance. Proceed with

extreme caution. Continue with system re-initialization? (y/n)[n]:

Choose the default system you want MC to boot up from. For this example, we chose to boot from system image 1

This machine has the following bootable system:

After selecting the system image, the following messages (or similar messages) will be seen:

haveged: haveged starting up

Restoring box to factory state. This will delete all customer data.    

Factory state restored.                                        

Note:  The message "Restoring box to factory state. This will delete all customer data." indicates you successfully restored the unit to factory default.  If you do not see this message repeat the steps.   

Set up and configure Management Center

You can log terminal output during the setup and configuration of Management Center for future reference.

 Once the unit has booted, choose "2) Setup console".

Follow the instructions on the screen to configure the IP, subnet mask, Default Gateway, DNS, Console password and enable password.
