Issue/Introduction

After performing an upgrade, when attempting to run Altiris Profiler, LogViewer, or other diagnostic programs or utilities-- the following error box pops up:

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

Environment

Management Platform 8.1x, 8.5x

Cause

Sometimes the Read & Execute permission is lost in the folder structure for "Authenticated Users".

Resolution

  1. In Windows Explorer browse to "...\Program Files\Altiris\Diagnostics"  (or wherever the program that fails to launch resides).
  2. Right-click on the folder and select "Security"
  3. If the permissions for "Authenticated Users" is set to "List folder contents" and or "Read", click edit and Add "Read & execute".
  4. Finally, go into "Advanced" and select "Change Permissions", select "Authenticated Users" then enable the box "Replace all child object permission entries with inheritable permission  entries from this object"
  5. Apply.

Note: In case you can't add the mentioned permissions to "Authenticated Users", a workaround is to copy the following files from "...\Program Files\Altiris\Diagnostics" to the Desktop:

  • Profiler.exe.config
  • Profiler.exe
  • Interop.SHDocVw.dll
