Issue/Introduction

If an Encryption Management Server cluster member has the Web Email Protection service disabled, that cluster member will not receive Web Email Protection data from cluster members that have the Web Email Protection service enabled. This speeds up replication and ensures that the database size is kept to a minimum on the cluster member with the Web Email Protection service disabled.

However, under the following circumstances, the cluster member will start to receive Web Email Protection data from cluster members that have the Web Email Protection service enabled:

  1. The cluster member has been upgraded to release 3.3.2 MP10, 3.3.2 MP11, 3.3.2 MP12, 3.3.2 MP13 or 3.4 from an earlier release.
  2. The cluster member's hostname is not in all lower case characters. For example, its hostname may be Sems01.example.com or SEMS01.EXAMPLE.COM rather than sems01.example.com.
  3. An administrator clicks on the Save button in the System / Network page of the administration console.

In the circumstances above, the Web Email Protection service will remain showing as stopped in the administration console and therefore this change in replication behavior is not apparent. Symptoms may include slower replication and an increase in the size of backups on the affected cluster member.

Note that in Encryption Management Server 3.3.2 MP10 and above, the hostname will automatically change to lower case when an administrator clicks on the Save button in the System / Network page of the administration console. This is by design.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in Encryption Management Server 3.4 MP1.

In earlier releases, after saving the network settings of a cluster member that has the Web Email Protection service disabled, doing the following will ensure that the cluster member will not receive Web Email Protection data from cluster members that have the Web Email Protection service enabled:

  1. Enable the Web Email Protection service from the Services page of the administration console.
  2. Wait for services to start.
  3. Disable the Web Email Protection service from the administration console.
