How do I get VMware clients to boot in WinPE 2.1? VMware clients are failing to boot in WinPE 2.0 and 2.1 (DS 6.9) due to driver problems.

Note that the VMware client did boot in WinPE 1.6 (Deployment Solution 6.8)

  1. In VMware select the VM client.
  2. Click on File > Close (note that the client must be completely shut down of all VMware activity or the changes will not stick).
  3. Browse to the VMware clients directory where the .vmx file is located.
  4. Open the <VMclient name>.vmx file.
  5. At the following point in the file insert the additional parameter (see below):

    ethernet0.present = "TRUE"
    ethernet0.wakeOnPcktRcv = "FALSE"

    ethernet0.present = "TRUE"
    ethernet0.wakeOnPcktRcv = "FALSE"
  6. Save the file.
  7. Open the VM client in VMware and boot it to WinPE.

Note: If the driver problem persists, double check the .vmx file and make sure the changes stuck. Also note that WinPE 2.1 requires 512 MB of RAM to boot properly.

Note: Vista VMware clients have this setting enabled by default.
