Issue/Introduction

How you know which config files have been used during installation? How you know what config file(s) to run if you have to reconfigure a specific Solution rather than trying to run the following commands:

Pre-8.6: "aexconfig.exe /configureall"?

or

Post-8.6: Open SIM>Repair installed products>Reconfigure installed products?

Environment

ITMS 8.x

Resolution

There may be other approaches to answer this question, however, the following two options have worked previously in similar situations:

Option 1:

If you look at the SIM install logs you should see entries like this:

Module: AeXSVC.exe
Source: Altiris.NS.Installation.ProductConfigurationWorker.ConfigureProductInternal
Description: Configuring product C:\Program Files\Altiris\Notification Server\Config\CoreSolution.config.

Module: AeXSVC.exe
Source: Altiris.NS.Installation.ProductConfigurationWorker.ConfigureProductInternal
Description: Configuring product C:\Program Files\Altiris\Resource\ResourceMgmt.config.

The messages above are usually entries indicating what config files are called during the installation process. Usually the SIM (Symantec Installation Manager) Install logs will display the order in which the config files were run.  Those logs can be found in the same place as the regular NS logs but the file has a name similar to “Install 2012-06-20 08-07-17” and is found in "C:\ProgramData\Symantec\SMP\Logs".

Option 2:

Another approach is to use ORCA (https://www.guidingtech.com/download-orca-msi-editor-standalone/) and use it to refer to the MSI itself. ORCA should tell you which config file calls are made when it runs the install process.

For example, the main MSI for the SMP itself is altiris_ns_7_1_sp2_x64.msi. When ORCA opens, under Properties>ProductConfigFile, you should see that it calls CoreSolution.config. However, if it is an update installation (like from SP1 to SP2), the config file called is NS_Update.config found under ProductConfigUpdateFile.

So, in this case you can run the following command line indicating the specific config file that you want:

AeXConfig.exe /configure C:\Program Files\Altiris\Notification Server\Config\CoreSolution.config

You can use ORCA to look for what config files other Solutions uses initially.

NOTE: If you want to know what the sequence of MSIs during the install is then create a Support Package with SIM and look for the file called LatestInstallPackages.xml. In this you should see which MSIs were called during the latest installation/upgrade. For example, for the Platform itself without any Solutions (in SMP 8.7.2), this is the MSI installation order:

CoreSolution.config
ResourceMgmt.config
Reporting.config
Reports.config
