This article provides frequently asked questions and answers about what handheld devices can be used by Barcode Solution.
Question: What handheld devices is Barcode Solution designed to work with?
Answer: Symantec has tested and certified several handheld devices and scanners for use with Barcode Solution. It is strongly recommended that only these be used. If ones are used that were not tested and certified, Symantec Technical Support cannot guarantee that they will work or not with Barcode Solution and they may be unsupported. Furthermore, sub-models of the tested and certified models may or may not work. For example, the non-tested Motorola Dolphin 7990 is a sub-model of the tested and certified Motorola Dolphin 7000. These may work due to their hardware similarities to their parent model, however, these have not been officially tested and certified and may be unsupported.

Question: What handheld device operating systems is Barcode Solution designed to work with?
Answer: Barcode Solution can work with Windows Mobile 5.0 through 6.5.3, depending on the version of Barcode Solution being used and if the handheld device and its operating system have been certified and tested. Older versions of Barcode Solution do not support newer Windows Mobile operating systems. In general, these Windows Mobile operating systems include:
In addition to requiring specific certified and tested hardware, these supported handheld devices are only approved if they are running the operating system that was tested on them by Symantec. For example, the Motorola Dolphin 7900 was tested and certified when running Windows Mobile 5.0. This may have been upgraded to, for example, Windows Mobile 6.5.3 Professional. These may work due to being on the same hardware, however, these device and operating system combinations have not been officially tested and certified and may be unsupported.
Note: The Windows Mobile operating system for handheld devices should not be confused with the Windows Mobile application or workstations running Windows 7 and higher, which is used to enable a connection between the handheld device and the workstation.
Question: Does Barcode Solution support running on stand-alone scanners without an operating system?
Answer: Barcode Solution suppots one type of stand-alone scanner, also known as RFID or "dumb" scanners, which is the CF Scan Card / CF RFID RSC 6P from Socket. Because this has no Windows Mobile OS, Barcode Manager cannot be installed onto it. This is therefore used very diffently than a "smart" device that has Windows Mobile. Answer: Barcode Solution is only designed to be installed and ran on Window Mobile 5.0 through 6.5.3, not on any other version or a different operating system.
Barcode Essentials, made by the same developer, Basis Design, who created Barcode Solution for Symantec, does, however, run on Apple's iOS-based iPhones and iPads.
