UNIX Agent and UNIX Inventory pre-requisite questions:
What are the disk space requirements?
Disk Space 7-20 MB (depending on the platform)
Linux ~20 MB
*NIX ~7-15 MB
Linux ~ 1.5 MB
*NIX ~ 5 MB
Are there specific ports that the communication needs to work on?
No. HTTP (port 80) or HTTPS (port 443) are used for all communication between the Notification Server and client machines. Multicast and tickle are configurable through Notification Server and can be setup manually. Article 1176 is a Ports and Protocols document which list ports requirements for every Altiris product.
Is there any more technical information over and above the product guide and release notes?
All necessary information is included in product guide and release notes. Additionally some documents exist in the knowledgebase (kb.altiris.com).
Are there any known "gotchas" regarding implementation?
Each client machine must be able to resolve the Notification Server's FQDN. While it is possible to configure the NS and clients to work with an IP address, agent packets will not go to Notification Server. See the related article 20070 for more information.
Which file system can this be installed to? For example /opt or /var or another file system.
By default everything is installed to /opt/altiris. Notification Server UNIX Agent can and will work on any file system. (Note that the Deployment Solution ADLagent does require a specific installation path). The Notification Server Agent for UNIX/Linux can be installed to any custom location e.g. /var, or /usr, but we recommend install everything to default location which is /opt/altiris/notification.
