Important Note: IT Analytics (ITA) and its Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) report pack are not stand alone products. ITA is an Altiris 7.1 solution that requires a dedicated Symantec Management Platform (SMP) 7.1 server and Microsoft SQL Server running Reporting and Analysis services. These must be installed, configured and operational before ITA can be installed, configured and used in the Altiris Console. Note: As this is not a fast or necessarily simple process and may require additional hardware, evaluation of using ITA for SEP reports may need to be considered before continuing.

Once the SMP is operational and the Microsoft SQL Server is running Reporting and Analysis Services, ITA can be installed and configured. The following instructions describe how to do this:
 

  1. On the SMP server, run Symantec Installation Manager (SIM). Note: The SEP disc includes the executable file for SIM, which is the universal file needed to install SIM and then the SMP and finally any desired solutions, such as ITA. This file does not need to be ran if the SMP is already set up. If not, refer to the following articles to first do this before continuing:

  2. In SIM, click on "Install new products".
  3. Click on the "Filter: Suites" button and change this to None.
  4. Select the current version of Altiris IT Analytics 7.1. The current version as of this article's publication is "Altiris IT Analytics 7.1 XXX" (XXX - Service Pack version).
  5. Select any report packs to also install such as "Altiris IT Analytics Symantec Endpoint Protection Pack 7.1 SP1A". Note 1: A thirty day trial license will be installed for each report pack. To continue using the report pack past this, install a license using "Add/Update licenses" from the main SIM page. If no licenses are available, please contact your Symantec Sales representative for more information. After IT Analytics 7.1 SP2, licenses for its report packs are no longer required. Please refer following article: http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO39472 Note 2: Report packs may not be able to be installed until the ITA solution itself is installed. If so, first install ITA, then afterwards, return to the Install new products page (step 2) and continue installing any reports packs needed.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions for installing ITA and any report packs.
  7. After ITA and any report packs are installed, SIM can be closed.
  8. Next, open a SMP Console. This is located at Start > All Programs > Symantec > Symantec Management Platform 7.1 or an icon may have been placed on the desktop.
  9. To access ITA, click on the Settings button > Notification Server > IT Analytics Settings.
  10. From here, connections must be set up, cubes installed, reports installed and then finally processing can be started. The following article discusses how to set all of this up:
