How to Reduce Service Startup Time for Symantec Mail Security for Exchange (SMSMSE) by Skipping Enumeration of Mailboxes and Public Folders

When the SMSMSE service starts it performs queries to Active Directory obtaining a list of mailboxes and public folders.  These lists are using during scanning of the Exchange Information Store.  In addition SMSMSE also performs the enumeration on a scheduled time period (by default every four (4) hours).

In some environments this enumeration may take a minute or two. There may be situations where it is desirable to have the SMSMSE service start up more quickly.  SMSMSE can be configured to skip enumeration of the mailboxes and public folders during startup.  This increase the speed with which the service starts.

Perform the following steps to configure SMSMSE to skip enumeration during service startup:

1. Start regedit.
2. Create the following DWORD if not present:

32-bit OS: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\SMSMSE\<version>\Server\RefreshListOnStartupEnabled
64-bit OS: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Symantec\SMSMSE\<version>\Server\RefreshListOnStartupEnabled

NOTE: Replace <version> with the version of the software in stalled.  The following is an example of the registry key for 6.5 on a 64-bit operating system:


3. Set the value of the registry key to zero (0).
4. Close regedit.

At the next service start of SMSMSE the mailboxes and public folders are not enumerated.


  • This article only applies to SMSMSE version 6.5.2 and higher.

Technical Information

The information about the mailboxes and public folders is stored in the following configuration file:

32-bit OS: C:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSMSE\<version>\Server\Config\master.mb
64-bit OS: C:\Program Files(x86)\Symantec\SMSMSE\<version>\Server\Config\master.mb

There are entries for each mailbox per line that look similar to the following:

This information is used in the SMSMSE Administration Console when creating or editing a scheduled or manual scan:

1. Open the Symantec Mail Security for Exchange (SMSMSE) adminstration console.
2. Click on the Scans tab.
3. Perform the following steps to configure/view a manual scan:

a. Click on Views|Manual Scan.
b. Click on Tasks|Edit manual Scan...
c. Click the Next button.
d. The list is shown inthe Mailboxes section of the dialog box.

4. Perform the following steps to configure/view a scheduled scan:

a. Click on Views|Scheduled Scans.
b. Click on either Tasks|New scan... or Tasks|Edit Scan....
c. Enter a name for the scan if appropriate then click the Next button.
d. The list is shown inthe Mailboxes section of the dialog box.
