Question

How does the Microsoft Background Intelligent Transfer Service* (BITS) service affect the interation between Altiris Agent and its communication with the Notification Server? If the client computer has this service set to manual and not started, will this affect the ability for that client to communicate with the NS server properly (with or without bandwidth throttling)?

Answer

From a code standpoint, Altiris Agent communication with Notification Server will have no problems with the BITS service as BITS and Altiris utilize different ports and process logic.  The only potential conflict would be if either Altiris or BITS traffic across the network consumed a majority of the network bandwidth; then other processes would need to wait until there was bandwidth available to continue.
