Question

Customizing Installations with Dialog Themes

Answer

With dialog themes, you can create a uniform look and feel for dialogs across multiple installation projects. You can save these themes and apply them to installations on a per-installation or even per-release basis.

-------------------------------------------

To apply a dialog theme to an installation:

1. Open your .WSI in Wise Installation Studio/Express,  Windows Installer Editor in Wise Package Studio, or Wise for Windows Installer.

2. In Installation Expert, go to the Dialogs page.

3. On the Dialogs page, select Bronze from the Theme drop-down list.

4. The preview pane displays the dialog with the new theme. Select different dialogs from the Dialogs list to see how the theme affects them.

-------------------------------------------

To create a dialog theme:

1. Open your .WSI in Wise Installation Studio/Express,  Windows Installer Editor in Wise Package Studio, or Wise for Windows Installer.

2. In Installation Expert, go to the Dialogs page.

3. On the Dialogs page, click the Edit Themes button. The Edit Themes dialog appears.

4. In the Edit Themes dialog, click the New button and type a name for the theme in the Name field.

Note:
To modify an existing theme, click the theme to modify from the list on the left. To create a new theme based on an existing theme, click a theme in the list, click the Copy button, and type the theme's name in the Name field.

5. Click Browse next to the Top Image Preview box and select the desired graphic file. The image must be a .BMP and 500x63 pixels.

6. Click Browse next to the Side Image Preview box and select the desired graphic file. The image must be a .BMP and 501x314 pixels.

7. To modify the Title and Main fonts for the dialogs, click the Set Font button. The Title font settings control the font for the title of all dialogs with a top image, and the main settings control all main informational text. To edit the large text specific to an individual dialog such as the large Welcome message on the Welcome Dialog, use the Dialog Editor in Setup Editor.

8. Click OK to save the dialog theme. This theme is now available for all of your Wise installation projects.

You can also apply dialog themes on a per-release basis. This can be useful for a .WSI project where multiple releases contain a demo or other versions of a product. Once you create your theme, you can specify the theme for each release on the Releases page.

If you add a custom graphic to an installation theme, make sure it is a .BMP and the correct size. Because .BMP files are stored in the binary table, your .MSI contains the additional size of the two .BMP files. To make a smaller .MSI, reduce the size of the .BMPs included in the installation theme by using pallets or running length compressed .BMPs.

By using dialog themes, you can easily change the look and feel of all your .MSI installations. Additionally, you can generate a uniform corporate identify, create specialized per-release graphics, and manage the look and feel of all installations, all from one simple location.
