This article is designed to aid administrators through the installation of PGP Universal Server 2.5/2.6. This article also contains important pre-installation information.

HOW-TO Install PGP Universal 2.5/2.6

There are several factors to consider before installing and adding PGP Universal 2.5/2.6 to your network environment. It is therefore important to have at least a basic understanding of PGP Universal's functionality, as well as a familiarity with the terminology used to describe it. This information can be found in the Readme file and in the PGP Universal Administrator's Guide. PGP Universal Server is distributed on 2 CDs. One CD contains the documentation described and the other is the installer. Use this installer CD to boot the server.

Before completing the installation steps in this document, please make sure the target system meets the minimum system requirements. PGP Universal is certified for use on several different hardware platforms, which are described in the Readme. Incompatibilities related to hardware that is not on the certified list will not be supported.

Warning: Before installing PGP Universal, please also be aware of the following: The installation process will automatically repartition the primary hard disk of the target computer, and all data on the primary hard disk will be lost.

There are several installation options available with PGP Universal 2.5/2.6. This article covers only the customnet option, which is the default option. By pressing F2 at the initial PGP Installation Screen you can see the available installation boot options.

If you choose to run a customnet (default), standard, or expert installation you will enter in your network information during this software install.  If you choose a noautopart or pgp installation, you will enter network information after the installation process, through the browser-based Setup Assistant. Up until you do this, PGP Universal will automatically assume the IP address of 192.168.1.100/16. Therefore, avoid network conflicts by making sure this address is not already in use.

Installer Boot-Options:
  • noautopart - installer allows use of Disk Druid for partitioning

  • customnet (default) - installer allows you to define network settings

  • standard - combines noautopart and customnet

  • expert - same as standard with additional options available

  • pgp - no user interaction after Welcome Screen

  • pgp noprobe - disables hardware probing

  • pgp dd - allows you to insert a driver disk

  • memtest86 - tests RAM but doesn't install Universal Server

  1. Set up the system that will be hosting the server in a secure location.

  2. Attach a keyboard and monitor to the server on which you are installing.

  3. Insert the PGP Universal Server installation CD into the CD-ROM drive.

  4. Reboot the system.

Note: If you have difficulty booting from the installation CD, make sure the CD-ROM drive is designated as the first boot device in the system BIOS.

  5. When the system reboots the install begins and you should see the following screen:

  6. At the prompt, press Enter (this will run the default customnet installation).

If you want to install with another Installer Boot Option, enter the option at the boot: prompt.

This pre-installation process will take approximately 2 minutes.

  7. Select OK at the Welcome screen.

Note: If you choose the pgp or noautopart installer boot option skip to step 11. You will enter in the network information later during the Web-Based PGP Universal Setup Assistant.

    The Network Configuration screen appears.
  8. Enter the IP address and Netmask for the PGP Universal Server, and select OK.

The Miscellaneous Network Settings screen appears.

  9. Enter the Gateway, Primary DNS, Secondary DNS, and an optional Tertirary DNS, and select OK.

    The Hostname Configuration screen appears.

  10. Enter the Hostname for the PGP Universal Server and select OK.

Note: The Hostname must be the fully-qualified domain name of the external, untrusted interface. PGP Corporation strongly recommends you name your externally visible PGP Universal Server according to the keys.<domain> convention, which allows other PGP Universal Servers to easily find valid public keys for email recipients in your domain.

  11. The installation will now Format the Drive(s), Copy necessary Files, and then perform the Package Installation.

This process will take approximately 15 minutes.

  12. When the software is installed, the system will automatically reboot.

  13. After it has rebooted, you will see a "pgpuniversal login:" prompt. Do not log in here. Login to the administrative interface to begin the Setup Assistant.
