Issue/Introduction

Resolution

On Symantec Messaging Gateway you con define invalid Recipient based on your Directory Data Source:

  1. In the Control Center, Protocols and under Invalid Recipients
  2. Click on Invalid Recipients
  3. Invalid recipient handling settings are independent from the Remove unresolved recipients action on the Directory Harvest Attacks page, and can be used in conjunction with it.
  4. The Remove unresolved recipients setting only removes invalid recipients if a directory harvest attack is occurring. This setting and the Drop invalid recipients or Reject invalid recipients settings can be combined or enabled individually.

Note: If you enabled recipient validation to create probe accounts, it is not necessary to configure invalid recipient handling. The probe account feature captures the invalid email address regardless of how you handle the email itself.

Understanding Invalid recipient handling Settings/Options in detail:

  1. Accept all recipients: Accepts all messages, whether or not the recipients are valid. Bounce messages are sent if your internal mail server is configured to send them.

  2. Reject invalid recipients: Reject messages addressed to user names that do not exist in your directory. The sending MTA may generate a bounce message to the sender. You must configure a data source for recipient validation before enabling this feature.

Note: If you select this option or Drop invalid recipients, your choice does not take effect until you enable recipient validation for each domain desired on the Protocols > SMTP > Domains page.

  3. Drop invalid recipients: Click to drop messages addressed to user names that do not exist in your LDAP directory. No bounce messages are returned to the sender. You must configure a data source for recipient validation before enabling this feature.

Note: You must configure an LDAP server for recipient validation before enabling Reject invalid recipients. Also If you click Drop invalid recipients or Reject invalid recipients, your choice will not take effect until you enable recipient validation for each domain desired on the Protocols > SMTP > Domains page.
