Question
How do you update the database engine from MSDE 2000 to SQL Server 2000 (and higher)?

Answer
When the time comes to migrate your MSDE 2000 to SQL Server, you have several options:

  • You can upgrade the existing MSDE 2000 to SQL Server. The SQL Server installation program recognizes an installation of MSDE 2000 and its accompanying data files and transaction logs. This allows you to upgrade MSDE 2000 directly to SQL Server. For more information, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

  • You can upgrade from earlier versions to Microsoft SQL Server 2000. You can also perform upgrade operations after you have installed SQL Server 2000. For information, visit the following Microsoft Web sites:

  • You can remotely administer MSDE 2000. To do this, point your computer running SQL Server to the computer running MSDE 2000, and then upload the MSDE 2000 data to the computer running SQL Server. For more information, visit the following Microsoft Web sites:

  • You can detach the MSDE 2000 data file, and then attach it again on a computer running SQL Server. For information, visit the following Microsoft Web sites:
