Question
Why do the number of computers in the All Computers collection sometimes differ from the number in the Resources > Defaults > Computers item?

Answer

The ALL COMPUTERS COLLECTION uses the following SQL query:

select Guid from vResource where Guid in (select Guid from vComputerResource where IsManaged=1 )

The description of All Computers collection is "This Collection contains all managed client computers known to Altiris Notification Server."

If a computer has the Altiris Agent installed (“IsManaged =1”) and the Status is set to Active, the computer is included in the All Computers collection.

If a computer has the Altiris Agent installed (“IsManaged =1”) and its Status is set to Retired (or a status other than Active), the computer is not included in the All Computers collection.

If a computer does not have the Altiris Agent installed (“IsManaged =0”) and its Status is set to Active, the computer is not included in the All Computers collection.

If a computer does not have the Altiris Agent installed (“IsManaged =0”) and its Status is set to Retired (or a status other then Active), the computer is not included in the All Computers collection.

Status is “Active”

Status is “Disposed”

"Is managed = 1” indicates the Altiris Agent is installed on the computer.

Try the query above and change the ‘IsManaged’ value from 1 to 0. See if you get a list of unmanaged computers (computers that don’t have an Altiris Agent installed or don't have a status set to Active). The Altiris Database stores the computer’s information about the Altiris Agent installation and Status differently. The Status column reflects the Set Asset Status and has the options of Active, Disposed, In Stock, Missing, On Order, Retired, Returned to Lessor, and RMA. If a computer’s status is set to anything other then Active, it will be excluded from the “All Computers” collection. If a computer doesn't have the Altiris Agent installed (IsManaged = 0) it will be excluded from the "All Computers" collection.

Computers can be added to the Altiris Database through methods such as resource discovery and active directory import and not have an Altiris Agent installed on them. They won’t appear in the All Computers collection. Computers that don’t have a status of Active won’t appear in the All Computer collection.

DEFAULT COMPUTERS list

Not all the computers in your environment will be in the Resources tab > Resources Management > Resources > Defaults > Computer > [Active Directory Name] item. If you use Active Directory Import and have your computers in sub-organizational units, those computers are not included in the Computers > Defaults > Computer item, but can be found under the Resources tab > Resources Management > Resources > Organizational Structures > [Domain] item.

The computers in the Resources tab > Resources Management > Resources > Defaults > Computers > [domain] and the Resources tab > Resources Management > Resources > Organizational Structures > [Domain] item list the computers with any or no status set and both “IsManaged = 1” and “IsManaged = 0”.

If the Status field is blank, Notification Server assumes the computer status is "Active".
