Question
I am planning to do a DNS record for a new NS that will have some features for some general customers. I want to be able to type, for example, Altiris on the browser, then that phrase will be associated to the NS box IP address, which should have the NS console as the default page. So how do I make the Altiris Console the default page in IIS?
Would like to change the default page for NS to point for towards the console 6.5 rather than the default web page.

For example, rather than using http://localhost/Altiris/NS for the Altiris Console 6.0 or http://localhost/Altiris/Console for the Altiris Console 6.5 I will like to use http://MyNSserver

Answer

The following steps should work for both Altiris Consoles, Altiris Console 6.0 and 6.5. Make sure that you use the right page paths.

Create a file ( for example consoleRedirect.asp with Notepad) then save it under C:\Inetpub\wwwroot. This file should contain the following:

<html>

<head>
<meta HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" Content="text/html; charset=Windows-1252">

<title ID=titletext>Redirecting to Altiris Notification Server Console</title>
</head>

<body bgcolor=white>
<% response.redirect("http://localhost/altiris/ns") %>

</body>
</html>

  1. After saving this file, go to IIS Manager and, under Default Web Site, right-click on it and go to Properties > Documents. Click on Add and type the name of the file (consoleRedirect.asp) and click OK.
  2. Then Move Up the file to the top of the list and click OK. If you are asked to apply to any of the child files, click Cancel (we don't want that file to overwrite any of the child Web sites at this point).
  3. Then go to Start > Run prompt and type iisreset. This will stop and restart IIS services. Then open your browser and type localhost; this will redirect you to the NS Console.

If you want to add also the Servername into the file, just add another lines like this:

<% response.redirect("http://MyServerName/altiris/ns") %>
<% response.redirect("http://MyServerName/") %>

Note: If you want to redirect the default page to use the Altiris Console 6.5, use the same steps but you will need to modify/add the right path in the consoleRedirect.asp file. For example:

<% response.redirect("http://localhost/altiris/console") %>
<% response.redirect("http://MyServerName/altiris/console") %>
<% response.redirect("http://MyServerName/") %>
